Big third quarter helps fuel 35-24 Chandler win over Mt. Pointe on Cox 7
Recap
Chandler started the scoring but it wasn't their offense that put up the first points. DB
Paul Perkins
picked off a Caleb Buck pass and ran to pay dirt. 7-0 Wolves.
Mt. Pointe didn't back down and followed up with a score of their own. Former starting QB Dillan Johnson was moved to RB for the Pride and had some nice runs on the drive but it was his arm that set up MP's first score. A halfback pass from Johnson to sophomore
Jalen Brown
put the ball inside the 5 and
Thomas Warren
capped off the drive with a short TD. 7-7.
Third series in a row that was a scoring drive. Chandler QB
Darrell Garretson
hit
San Diego State
Lloyd Mills
on a 42 yard score. 14-7 Wolves in the 2nd.
The half ended on a strange series of events. Mt. Pointe drove the ball inside the redzone with under a minute to play but fumbled the ball away. But on the very first play, MP linebacker Wes Payne picked Garretson and gave the Pride life just before the half. Ryan Sheehan kicked a 31 yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-10 at the half.
Chandler opened up the 3rd quarter with two unanswered points to build a 28-10 lead. RB Paul Perkins scored for the Wolves on their opening drive of the half and an INT by John Meile led to a Garretson to TE Pat Baldenegro score.
Mt. Pointe narrowed the lead to 28-17 on a Wes Payne score but Garretson score set up by two long Paul Perkins runs put the nail in the coffin.
A late TD pass from Buck to Jalen Brown capped the scoring and ended the game with a 35-24 final.
Bottomline
Mt. Pointe actually out gained Chandler but had 4 turnovers. Not going to win many games like that. I like how Chandler rebounded after their breakdown versus Basha. The run game with Perkins has been a nice compliment to Williams and Mills in Chandler's passing attack. Mt. Pointe is a quality team. They have lost to top ranked teams Hamilton, Desert Vista and now Chandler, the road doesn't get easier with Brophy and Corona up next.
Game Ball
Chandler RB Paul Perkins is having a breakout year. He had a nice INT returned for a score and has helped establish a run game for the Wolves.
