Mt. Lions roll to 55-14 win on Cox 7 game of the week
Recap
The Battle for Brown Road got out of hand quickly as Red Mountain built a 21-0 lead over Mt. View and never looked back.
Red Mountain's defense got the Mt. Lions on the board first. DL Jonah Reinholz hit QB Chase Funk and forced a fumble that was scooped by DE Trenton Smothers and returned for a TD. 7-0.
Red Mountain got the ball back and former QB
Billy Freeman
lined up in the Wildcat and went right back to old form, hitting Cougar Garcia for a 20 yard gain and then rumbling 10 yards on a QB keep. QB Mason Thorman came back in the game and hooked up with Daniel McGill putting RM inside the 10.
Marcus Brantley
ran the ball to the 1 and Garcia got in from a yard out. 14-0 RM.
Another Mt View punt, a bad one at that, gave RM the ball at the 45. Thorman went right back to work hitting Aeron Carr for a big gain and Freeman for a score. 21-0.
Mt. View finally got on the board with about 2 mins left in the half. A defensive holding and a personal foul moved the ball for the Toros and RB Jeff Castillo ran it in from 5 yards out.
The teams traded turnovers and most thought Red Mountain would take a knee to end the half. Instead, Thorman hit McGill in stride for a 71 yard TD.
27-7 at half.
The second half saw much of the same from a scoring perspective as Red Mountain rolled to a 55-14 win. But on RM's first possession, Thorman raced in from 16 yards out and Freeman drop kicked in the conversion for two points. I personally have never seen that.
Thorman hit Pierce Drake and Freeman for another score in the second half. The Mt. Lions also scored in the 4th.
Mt. View got a late score from Tyson McDaniel.
Final 55-14.
Bottomline
Red Mountain was just the better team. They were bigger and faster. This is a team that has gotten better and better as the season has moved on. They have a big OL, a good young QB, solid receivers and Marcus Brantley is a play maker at RB. They could be dangerous come playoff time. They will need to cut down on penalties, the had double digit flags in this game.
Game Ball
You can go a number of ways. Billy Freeman was good all night, Chris Sepulveda had 3 INTs, Trenton Smothers had several sacks and a TD but I will go with QB Mason Thorman had 3 TD passes and 1 rushing.
