Desert Ridge jumped out to a 21-0 lead behind 3 Jordan Becerra TDs but it was Red Mountain that staged a furious fourth quarter comeback that made this game interesting.
Red Mountain inched closer when Marcus Brantley finally put some points on the board for the Mt. Lions in the 3rd quarter. But DR answered when Joey Counts rumbled in from a few yards out. 28-7 in favor of Desert Ridge.
After forcing a RM punt, it looked like DR was going to extend their lead and put the nail in the coffin. Instead, Red Mountain forced a fumble, scored a few plays later and converted the two-point play to make the game 28-15 and now a lot more interesting!!
With momentum clearly in hand, Red Mountain forced a punt and was able to march the field, with the help of a few penalties, and cut the lead to 28-22 on a 32 yards Mason Thorman to Aeron Carr TD pass on 4th and 12.
With about four minutes to play, Desert Ridge got the ball back, hoping to run out the clock. It didn't quite happen that way. Brantley picked off Thorman and gave Red Mountain the ball back at the 38 yard line with 2 minutes to play.
The Desert Ridge defense stepped up, lead by DE Damani Mosby, they forced a 4th and 11 play. Red Mountain tried a throwback play but it fell incomplete and Desert Ridge moves on to the semi-finals with a 28-22 win.
I thought this game was over early on. Credit Desert Ridge for building the early 21-0 lead but also give Red Mountain some credit for turning this into a ball game. Hard fought, tough game.
Three kids stand out to me. Jordan Becerra, Joey Counts and Damani Mosby form Desert Ridge. Also thought Marcus Brantley had a nice game for Red Mountain.
