Introducing Devon Finai

Q & A with Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton offensive lineman

Scout.com: What were your stats/honors from last season?
Devon Finai: "2nd team all region last year."

What is your official height and weight?
"6-1, 305."

What is your greatest football memory?
"I would say the Chandler game. We where were down in the 4th quarter, and our team never gave up hope, and we turned up the heat in the 4th and persevered to win that ball game, just the change of mood on Chandler's sideline when Blake Kemp threw the sideline pass to Kendyl Taylor for a touchdown. I gotta give props to Jaxon Hood for the striped fumble for a safety. After the game was over I see a lot of Chandler fans just crying over the loss. Its always great to beat Chandler, especially on their home turf."

What are your goals for the upcoming season?
"Hopefully get a scholarship, and to be the best I can be rather its Friday nights, practice, school, even doing my chores."

How are you preparing for the upcoming season? Will you attend any camps this summer?
"Our weightlifting/conditioning/O-line coach, Coach Tucker, is really doing a good job of making us faster and stronger, and does a very good job of organizing the weight lifting program. Camps attending UCLA, Utah, San Diego State, and Navy."

What aspect of your game have you really worked hard to improve? What area would you like to keep improving on?
"I really worked on my pass protection, staying more disciplined on my pass set."

Who are some of your teammates that people need to watch out for?
"Bryce Holland (LG), AJ Thigpen (QB), and Ethan Hendricks (DT)."

Name one teammate you really respect and why?
"I have to go with my right hand man and that's Patrick Joseph, has a great loving family with great morals, and he's a good leader, he works hard everyday in the weight room, and plays butt off, and I respect him for that."

Who is currently recruiting you? Do you have any offers yet?
"No I currently have no offers. My head coach told me to not worry so much about it, I'm gonna play and enjoy the game I love, and if a college recruiter sees that I'm a hardworking, productive, and all around good football player instead of criticizing me of my height, maybe I would have an offer."

Would you consider staying in state to play in college?
"Yes I would because it would make it easier on the family, and I like the changes that ASU, and UofA are making in their programs."

What would your top 5 college choices be?
"Tough choice. 1. Oregon 2. Utah 3. Cal-Berkeley 4. ASU 5. Washington."

Who is the best player you ever played against? Why?
"I would say going against Jaxon Hood but we're on the same team. Alex Barrett from Desert Ridge, he was probably the toughest out of everyone I played against, just overall a sound defensive lineman."

What are your best max lifts in the bench, squat, power clean and 40 yard dash?
"Bench; 335 Squat; 465 Power clean; 260 40; 5.4."

How do you think your coach would describe you as a player?
"He would describe me as a hard worker."

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
"Strengths; very good footwork, and I hurt people. Weaknesses I can be undisciplined some sometimes like not having my head up in my stance, blocking the wrong way, or run blocking with my head looking down."

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
"Deuce Lutui, that just signed with the Seahawks, told me to make sure to always get the first punch on the defender, he told me when you punch the defender in pass protection is to really hurt the defender's chest, and he told me that I should be practicing it, and I have. His advice helped me a lot in my technique, and I thank him."

Tell us what can we expect from your team this season?
"What I can tell you is to watch out because our team is working to make it and win state next year. Everyone is motivated and ready for the challenges that await us this upcoming season. Two days after the state game coach Belles addressed the lower classmen and told us what are we willing to do to make it to state for next year, a week later its offseason football, and were getting prepared for the upcoming football season."

What position do you think you will play in college?
"Hopefully I could play guard, but most likely center because of my height."

What can a college program expect from you as a player?
"They can expect a hard worker, showing up everyday ready to apply myself of what they have to offer, also being a leader with sronge morals."

What is your GPA and SAT/ACT score?
"GPA: 3.1."

What will the main factors be when you choose a school?
"I would say the academics, how the football program runs, the history of the school/football, and a school with comfort."
