Brophy Wins Opener
Brophy came out on fire to open the game, jumping out to a 21-0 lead, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions. QB Tyler Bruggman looked especially sharp, the run game was churning and Devon Allen was his typical self.
The second quarter was a different story. Mt. Ridge was able to get a few drives rolling but got in scoring position twice and came away with no points.
The Broncos recorded a safety near the end of the second quarter to end the half with a score of 23-0.
Mt. Ridge struck first in the second half, stopping Brophy on their opening drive then RB Treshawn Favors walked in from 5 yards after a hook and ladder play from QB Pono Ayers to Zach Miller. 23-7.
Despite the small increase in momentum, Mt. Ridge was never able to get any closer. Bruggman threw TD passes of 5 and 71 yards to Matt Klein and Allen to build the lead to 37-7.
Mt. Ridge and Favors scored with 1 minute to go in the game to give us a final of 37-14.
Brophy's first few series were as crisp as I have EVER seen a football team be, impressive enough but even more so that it was their first time on the field in 2012.
That being said, up 21-0, the Broncos didn't completely put the nail in the coffin. Although the game was never in question, Brophy let Mt. Ridge stick around and MR was never able to convert on crucial situations. A bad snap on a field goal and failed 4th and goal attempt on the five, left the Mountain Lions scoreless in the first half.
Did Brophy's kids get too confident and let up? Were they looking forward to Saturday? Hard to tell but they certainly will need to play better to beat Santa Margarita on Saturday.
Mt. Ridge is not a bad team. They have a good sized OL and Treshawn Favors is very very good. I would not be surprised to see Ridge make the playoffs.
Hard to give just one but both Devon Allen and Tyler Bruggman were spectacular this evening. Bruggman threw 3 TD passes, two to Allen.
