Hamilton defeats Chandler
Would expect a Chandler v. Hamilton game not to come down to the 4th quarter?
There were many very good match-ups in the state tonight and this game had it all. Huge crowd, turnovers, big plays and goalline stands.
The cross-twn rivals exchanged punts and then exchanged turnovers but it would be Hamilton that capitalized, scoring first on a 22 yard Daniel Wichman fied goal after a Cole Luke interception.
The Husky defense forced another punt and had the ball bounce their way, literally, on the next possession. Hamilton fumbled the ball, only to have their own Stevon Adams pick it up and race 60 yards for the score. 10-0 Hamilton.
A Darell Garretson bomb to Dionte Sykes finally put the Wolves on the scoreboard. The PAT was blocked. 10-6 Hamilton.
Hamilton went right back to work, this time using RB Frankie Felix. he rumbled to the 15 yard line and a few plays later QB Allen Thigpen put Hamilton up 17-6 on a 12 yard TD run.
Garretson would keep Chandler within range, hooking up with Mitch McCulley for his second TD of the night. Two-point conversion was no good. 17-12.
With just 30 seconds left inthe half, Thigpen ran 40 yards to set up another Wichman field goal as time expired to give Hamilton a 20-12 lead headed into the half.
Still very much in the game, Chandler marched down the fied on their opening possession only to turn the ball over on downs. Hamilton went right back down and extended their lead on a Thigpen to Elijah Williams TD pass. 27-12.
It only took the Wolves two plays to answer as Garretson found Patrick Baldenegro wide open and he raced 70 yards for the score. Two-point again was no good.
But Hamilton struck right back, calling Williams' name again and he took a reverse 35 yards for the final score of the night. 35-18.
Chandler made one last ditch effrt to score, getting to the 1 yard line with a few minutes to play but couldn't punch it in.
Final 35-18 Hamilton.
Chandler had their chances and could have made it much closer with a better kicking game. Hamilton has righted the ship and with things as wide open as they have ever been, has a legit shot at the state title.
Tough call but will go with QB Allen Thigpen. He ran for a score, threw another and his 40 yard run led to a field goal before the half.
