ASU Basketball lands local center

Herb Sendek and his staff have made no secret with their desire to land the most talented local recruits. Their entire current true freshmen class is composed of Phoenix area players, and with the began assembling their 2014 class with a pledge from Mesa Dobson's Kodi Justice. On Friday night Westwind Prep center Connor MacDougall became the second commitment of that group.

Devils Digest talked to MacDougall's AAU club coach, Jeff De Laveaga about the Sun Devils' new pledge.

"This is the fourth player I have coached that gave his commitment to Herb Sendek," De Laveaga commented. "Jahii Carson, Calaen Robinson, and Eric Jacobsen all signed with Arizona State. So we have a great relationship with Herb and his staff. Connor had offers from New Mexico and St. Mary's and a number of other programs but he wanted to stay home, because he is very close to his parents.

"Scott Pera did a good job recruiting him, but after he left Herb did an excellent job recruiting Connor. He's been on him non-stop for the last three, four weeks and when a Head Coach is recruiting you like that it makes a lot of difference. Herb made sure that not only Connor felt comfortable but also his mom and dad. Connor came to me during Thursday's practice and told me that he thought he was ready to commit and we got it done Friday night."

The 6-8 220 Connor MacDougall is ranked by Fox Sports Next as the 12th best center in the 2014 recruiting class.

"He has 10 percent body fat and is extremely powerful for being just 16 years old," De Laveaga said. "Connor is an excellent defender, blocks a lot of shots, and rebounds very well on both ends of the floor. He played some tight end (at his previous high school, Desert Vista), ran a 4.7 in the 40 (yard dash) and he can handle the ball very well for someone his size. So this kid can really move.

"He shoots around 55 percent from the field and has a good jump shot. He averages about 15 points and ten rebounds a game. He has only played the game for the last two years, and he is going to play about 120 games against very good competition by the time he leaves Westwind Prep Academy. So by the time he gets to Arizona State he will be fully developed. I'm very happy for him and I think he will come a long way in the next two years."

Fox Sports Next's West Coast recruiting analyst Josh Gershon offered this evaluation of MacDougall:

"At 6-8 he may be a little undersized for the center position," Gershon said following the last July evaluation period. "But he makes up for it with a strong frame and long arms. He rebounds well, he's a good finisher, and can step out up to 14 feet and shoot it. With that motor and his strength I think he is going to end up being a very good player. Definitely a player I'm very intrigued by."

In what is perceived to be a weak 2014 class for West Coast centers, MacDougall is certainly a prospect that can only gain more attention and subsequently additional offers between now and the 2013 November signing period. Nonetheless, De Laveaga currently feels that ASU's latest pledge is content staying committed to the Sun Devils.

"Connor is extremely excited and I have never seen him so happy," De Laveaga said.
