Scorpions to play in D3 state title game after 37-27 win over Williams Field Saturday
Recap
Desert Edge jumped out to a 17-0 lead but Williams Field didn't fold, scoring two late first half touchdowns to keep this game interesting.
Desert Edge's Ronald Dowdell intercepted Jeddediah Fagg's pass on The Opening drive and C.J. Heard scored for the Scorpions to give them a 7-0 lead.
A Chris Brown field goal and a Sawyer Lung QB sneak score gave DE a 17-0 lead and it looked as if the route was on.
But Williams Field got two huge pass plays with 5 minutes left in the half to keep them in the game. Fagg threw TD passes of 47 and 42 yards to Cole Forsgren to cut the lead to 17-14 at the half and the Black Hawks went into halftime with some momentum.
Desert Edge had a huge 3rd quarter, one that saw them 17 more points and build a lead that was too big to overcome.
Lung hooked up with
Kyle Woolard
on a screen pass and Woolard did the rest, rumbling in for a score to start the second half.
Ismael Murphy-Richardson
blocked a punt which lead to another Brown FG.
With the game now at 27-14, Williams Field marched the field, aided by a personal foul and cut the lead to 27-20 on a Sean Schweichler TD run. But this was as close as the Blackhawks would get.
Woolard and Lung again connected on a screen pass. This time Woolard took it 71 yards to the 5 yard line and Lung found Elijah Marks in the endzone for another score. 34-20.
Brown would kick another FG for Desert Edge and Forsgren scored a late TD for Williams Field to give the crowd a final of 37-27.
Desert Edge will face Queen Creek in the D3 state title next Saturday at ASU.
Bottomline
Desert Edge got big plays in all facets of the game. Sawyler Lung and Kyle Woolard had some big plays on offense, the Scorpion defense had 2 INTs on the night and Brown kicked 3 FGs.
Game Ball
Hard to give just one tonight for Desert Edge but I will go with QB Sawyer Lung, who has proven to be one of the state's most under-rated passers.
