THE DRAMA IS OVER. After a morning scare that he may be rethinking his verbal pledge to WSU, quarterback Tyler Bruggman signed his LOI with WSU at a ceremony at Brophy Prep moments ago.
Earlier in the day
Bruggman
walked into a National Football Foundation Signing Day gathering in Phoeniz carrying a WSU hat and looked ready to go up to the podium -- when he suddenly backed off and left the event with his parents and head coach, said Scout.com analyst Jason Jewel.
News that ASU verbal commit Josh Dobbs flipped from the Sun Devils to Tennessee this morning triggered the second thoughts for Bruggman, who narrowed his choices to ASU and WSU before picking WSU in early June.
The Devils had gone hard after Dobbs once Bruggman made his verbal commitment to the Cougs. His flip to Tennessee today definitely ranks as one of the bigger Signing Day surprises across the nation.
"He's on the fence, not sold either way," said Hod Robino of DevilsDigest.com said about Bruggman. "He's up in the air. I felt all along that his parents (ASU graduates) wanted him close to home."
A few hours later, the final-final decision was made. Bruggman, in a WSU hat, signed his Letter of Intent to the Washington State and faxed it in.
Cougar Nation let out a sigh of relief, and then they celebrated.
Earlier, when things were still in flux, Robino asked Bruggman this morning at the NFF event if he had signed with WSU and, if not, whether he was considering ASU. Bruggman said no to the first question and didn't comment on the second.
"I believe his mom wants him to stay home, and the dad and Tyler are trying to figure how he would fit into the offense at ASU," said Jewel.
"My gut feeling is that he picked WSU over ASU in the first place and what has changed since then?"
Turns out he was right!
