Hamilton Outlasts Brophy
With 10 new starters on offense and a QB going both ways, not many people gave Brophy a chance but this game was a battle all the way down to the 4th quarter.
The two teams exchanged punts and Brophy had a chance to take an early lead when Mohammed Oliver picked off a Sam Sasso pass and returned it inside the 5 yard line. Hamilton dodged a bullet though. Brophy fumbled the ball and DE Qualen Cunningham recovered it.
Hamilton was able to take advantage, driving 95 yards for the first score of the game. Sasso found Brandon Krcilek for a 45 yard gain and then hit RB Tyrell Smith on a pass that Smith took to the 1. Sasso jumped in from a yard out and Hamilton took the early 7-0 lead.
The Broncos responded with a drive of their own. QB Brian Woodward took control of the drive, hitting Michael Ward and Ryan Velez for first downs and running for another. The drive resulted in a 31 yard Phillip Mourikes field goal. 7-3.
Hamilton punched in one more score before the half. Getting the ball with 2 minutes to play, Sasso hit Krcilek twice for first downs and then Tyrell Smith got the ball to the 1 yard line. This time Smith plunged in and Hamilton took a 14-3 lead into halftime.
Woodward would lead Brophy to a score midway through the 3rd quarter but any momentum gained was lost when Sasso hit Kriclek on a 76 yard pass to again put Hamilton at the 1 yard line. Smith ran in again to build the lead to 20-9 as both teams missed the point after attempts.
It looked as if 20-9 would be the final but with 1 minute to go, Hamilton took a knee. Brophy called a timeout. On the very next play, Sasso hit sophomore Kyeler Burke for a score.
Final Hamilton 26 Brophy 9
This was a defensive battle that Hamilton won with their depth, depth that eventually wore Brophy out. Hamilton is not as explosive on offense as they have been in the past but their defense is lights out. Brophy had some chances but had two costly fumbles. Brophy is better than I expected and I will eat crow for not having them in my preseason top 10.
He didn't score any points but Hamilton WR Brandon Krcilek was huge in this game. He had big receptions that set up two Hamilton TDs.
