Mt. Pointe v. Desert Ridge

The Pride advance to D1 title game with a 27-9 win over Desert Ridge

Breakdown

Many fans expected a high scoring affair. What they got was a defensive battle, one in which the two teams totaled five field goals.

After forcing a turnover on downs, Mt. Pointe fumbled the ball away on what would be their only offensive play in the 1st quarter. Desert Ridge capitalized with a 50 yard Landon Whitlow field goal to take an early 3-0 lead. The Pride then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and despite a 1st and goal at the 7 yard line, Desert Ridge kicked another field goal. 6-0.

It wouldn't take Mt. Pointe long to score once they held onto the ball. Antonio Hinojosa hooked up with Jalen Brown on a deep ball to put the Pride up 7-6.

Desert Ridge added a field goal late in the half on a drive that was kept alive by 45 yards in Mt. Pointe penalties. Whitlow hit from 37 yards out to give the Jaguars a 9-7 lead at the half.

Mountain Pointe kicker John Abercrombie got in the action as well. He hit two 35 yard field goals in the 3rd quarter, the only points put up by either team.

With a 13-9 lead in the 4th, Pride RB Wesley Payne put the team on his back, busting threw the DR defense for 3 nice gains, the last one a 14 yard TD run that put Mt. Pointe up 20-9 with 7:30 left in the game.

The MP defense forced a 3 and out and put the game away on a Paul Lucas TD run.

Final 27-9 Mt. Pointe over Desert Ridge.

Bottomline

Desert Ridge did exactly what they wanted to in the first half. They kept Mt. Pointe's athletes off the field by playing ball control offense but their inability to get TDs instead of FGs haunted them. Mt. Pointe cleaned up their mistakes from the first half. Two fumbles hurt but so did a roughing the kicker call that gave Ridge a shot at more points and the three 15 yard flags they got that led to another DR field goal.

Game Ball

I am going with the Mt. Pointe defense. Holding Desert Ridge to field goals instead of TDs in the first half was huge and then the shutout in the second half secured the win. Keondre Churchwell and Wesley Payne were all over the field.
