Mountain Pointe caps perfect season with win over Hamilton.

Overcoming a sloppy start, the Pride found their pace putting up nearly 600 yards of total offense to bring home their first state title with a 42-19 win over Hamilton.

Early things looked good for defending champ Hamilton as they scored first on a powerful four yard TD run from Tyrell Smith. Mountain Pointe countered early in the second quarter with a 47 yard pitch pass from Wesley Payne to Jaylen Brown. Later in the second, on sprint right, Antonio Hinojosa pulled the ball down and dove in for the score. Hinojosa, in the final seconds of the half, hit senior receiver Emmanuel Butler on two big pass plays, the final one going for a score, giving the Pride a 21-7 lead at the intermission.

In the third quarter Hamilton made it interesting as Morris Kroma took off on an 84 yard punt return for a score. The PAT failed making the score 21-13.

In the fourth a nice pitch and catch from Hinojosa to Timmy Hernandez set up a one yard blast for a score from Wesley Payne. With the PAT Mountain Pointe stretched their lead to 28-13. Charlie Trevino of the Pride grabbed an interception off of Hamilton’s Sam Sasso. Off quick change, Paul Lucas hit up the gut on the inside counter 56 yards for a score. PAT good, Mountain Pointe up 35-13. Late, Kawuan Ellis ran in another score for Mountain Pointe. Hamilton’s Tyrell Smith added a late score, the two point conversion failed, making the final 42-19.

Mountain Pointe started the season with a win against national power Bishop Gorman and brought home the title with a final win against one of Arizona’s marquee programs capping a perfect season. The win gives Pride Head Coach Norris Vaughan his first championship in a 29 year coaching career.

Bottom line: Mountain Pointe had too many playmakers. Hinojosa was cool all night making accurate throws along with timely runs, finding his cadre of receivers while the stable of Pride backs all had nice runs helping bring home the title.
