SW Analyst Jason Jewell's take on the prospects from Friday's game
Chaparral v. Mt. View
Mt. View looked like typical Mt. View on their first possesion, marching methodically down the field on a five minute drive that led to a 31 yard Matt Gulbrandsen field goal. They took the early 3-0 lead but this was all they could muster until Jacom Brimhall scored late in the 4th.
Chaparral controlled this game from start to finish with a strong rushing attack led by Dwayne Garrett and Cole Tyree. Garrett scored two first half touchdowns and sophomore QB Connor Brewer rushed for one himself and threw another to Danny Trittler and the Firebirds took a big 28-3 lead into the half.
Garrett got a third quarter TD and Tyree added another rushing TD to make this game 42-3 before Brimhall added the late score against mainly Chaparral backups.
Chaparral proved they are for real. They played tough defense all night, stopping Mt. View on at least four 4th and shorts in this game. As good as they were last year, they are just as good. They have a big o-line, two capable backs and play tough defense.
Despite this performance, Mt. View will be a team to contend with all season. Brimhall is a good back, Brad Heap is a big strong-armed QB and the Toros don't turn the ball over much or commit many penalties.
Gotta give it to Dwayne Garrett for his three TDs.
