Firebirds roll 49-13 on Cox 7 Thursday game of the week
Recap
Horizon's best chance for a score in the first half came on their first drive but the Huskies missed a field goal and Chaparral turned in 42 unanswered points to give Horizon their second loss of the year 49-13 on the Cox 7 game of the week.
The Firebirds marched down and scored on a Connor Brewer play action fake to take the early 7-0 lead. Brewer connected with WR Alex Holmes for a 30 yard gain on the drive.
The RB tandem of
Dwayne Garrett
and
Cole Tyree
added two more scores before halftime and Chaparral controlled the game 22-0.
Garrett's earlier TD came from 53 yards out and on the second play of the second half, he raced in from 71 yards out. PAT was no good and Chap was up 28-0.
Garrett added another score in the third and Brewer hooked up with
Danny Trittler
from 42 yards out to make the score 42-0 in the 3rd and clearly in control.
Horizon finally got on the board when Matt Jones rushed for a score. Chaparral's
Brendan Murphy
returned the kickoff 91 yards for Chap's final score. Nate Defreitas had a short rushing TD late in the game for Horizon.
Final 49-13 Chaparral
Bottomline
Chaparral was just more explosive. As of right now, they look like the only team that can compete with Centennial in 5A2. They have a big o-line, two sound RBs, their receivers are coming along, they are getting good play from a young QB and they play good defense.
Horizon is a much improved team from last year.
Game Ball
Chaparral RB Dwayne Garrett was a man amongst boys. He had 3 TDs, had to have 200 yards rushing and averaged 10 yards per carry.
