Centennial v. Chandler
What more could you ask for? The #2 team in 5A1 travels to play the #2 ranked 5A2 team and this game did not disappoint.
Centennial started the 2010 season off right going on a nice long drive that resulted in a score. New starting QB Justin Sanchez was cool as ice in his first series of his first varisty start. He hit RB Zach Hoffpauir for a 16 yard gain and on a shovel pass that went for a 1st down. He also had two other passes that covered 10 yards or more on the drive before Jebron Harrington punched it in for the first score of the night. 7-0 Centennial after the PAT.
The two teams looked like they would exchange punts but on the Coyotes second series, on a 3rd and 14 play, Chandler was flagged for roughing the passer, giving Centennial the ball and the first down. An second personal foul gave CeHS a 1st and goal from the 3 and Vegas Johnson capped off the series with a 3 yard TD run. 14-0 Centennial.
Brett Hundley would not let his team quit, showing fiery spirit and led his team on a much needed scoring drive. He showed his skill through the air and on the ground, marching the ball inside the 10 yard line. Hundley found John Bishop for a 10 yard TD to keep the Wolves within reach. 14-7.
Centennial responded quickly. After CeHS returned the ball to the 45 yard line, WR Gary Ross raced 51 yards for his first of three TDs on the night. 21-7 Centennial.
Centennial added a fourth score late in the 2nd quarter after a roughing the punter gave the Coyotes the ball back, the very next play Sanchez hooked up with Ross on a 46 yard TD score that gave Centennial a 28-14 lead.
After some halftime adjustments, Chandler came out swinging. Hundley hit Javon Williams on a 68 yard TD pass with less then a minute off the clock in the 3rd. 28-21.
Chandler tied up the game late in the 3rd quarter. Aaron Mayo took a draw to the 28 yard line, the next play Hundley took the rock to the 1 and Bishop added his second score of the night to tie the game at 28.
The 4th quarter got interesting. Centennial added two scores back to back and most thought the game was over; some even left the stands. They missed what turned out to be a heck of a game. Centennial sophomore RB Jalen Ortiz had his coming out party. He scored from 82 yards out early in the fourth and again from 37 yards away. 41-28 Centennial.
The Wolves didn't stop fighting. Hundley hit Lloyd Mills for an 11 yard gain, ran for another 20 and then Aaron Mayo took over, rumbling to the 10 yard line and scoring from a yard out. 41-35.
Centennial recovered the onside kick attempt and put points on the board. Sanchez hit Vegas Johnson for a 20 yard gain and Ross added his third score of the night a play later. 48-35.
Hundley showed why he is Scout.com's #6 QB in the nation. He picked a part the CeHS defense finding Williams and Michael Okonkwo on several key passes and got the Wolves within one score on a 1 yard TD keeper. 48-42.
This time the onside kick was successful and Chandler had a chance to win with just over a minute to play. A pass interference call put the ball at the 28, Hundley found Okonkwo at the 8 yard line and Chandler now had 1st and goal at the 8 with 59 seconds to play.
The comeback didn't come to fruition for the Wolves though as four staright passes fell incomplete.
Final: Centennial 48 Chandler 42
What a great game to start the 2010 season; a ton of scoring, big plays, turnovers, D1 players (there were so many four-year prospects it was hard to track them all) and a game that went to the wire.
Chandler had their chances, but had a few crucial turnovers that led to Centennial scores.
Both of these teams are loaded and I expect both to make deep playoff runs.
Have to go with the explosive Gary Ross from Centennial for scoring 3 TDs.
Cannot deny what Brett Hundley did.
